This variety of grape has been grown in Switzerland since the Middle Ages and was first cultivated by Cistercian monks. It is perfectly suited to the Swiss soil which brings out the full extent of its characteristics, so much so that it is nowadays almost exclusively grown here.
This variety is difficult and often pain-staking to cultivate, and the yield is also low, making it even more exclusive wine, with Switzerland producing some of its finest examples.

In the mouth, the fruit flavours are balanced by a hint of sharpness giving the wine a smooth yet lively character.
